            Why is this metric important?

            Recreation programming offers experiences that enrich the lives of Carson City locals and the residents of surrounding communities. We achieve this through creating opportunities that nurture our community, form lasting memories and instill a sense of belonging. By promoting physical fitness and healthy habits, we work to improve the overall wellness of our community. We also encourage personal achievement and help to create involved and responsible citizens. These programs go directly to maintaining and enhancing the overall quality of life.

            How do we measure this metric?

            We measure this goal by tracking all the participants in city recreation sports programs as administered by the Parks & Recreation department such as aquatics lessons, aquatics fitness classes, youth enrichment activities, sports participation, adaptive classes for disabled individuals and classes with contracted instructors.

            What progress are we making towards this metric?

            Based on previous surveys, department strategies are focusing on the demands from a significant increase in the number of baby boomers utilizing recreation centers as well as increased interest in cardiovascular and weight training activities, aquatic activities, yoga, tai chi, computer labs, and continuing education classes. We also are expecting overall usage of facilities to be higher for programs focused on outdoor sports such as soccer and lacrosse as well as an increase in demand for individual sports such as rock climbing, climbing walls, mountain biking, kayaking, triathlons and bicycle riding.
