          Why is this metric important?

          This measure combines citywide, public and private investment into building activity as an indicator of economic activity in Carson City. New construction and rehabilitation of existing buildings is important to maintain citywide property values. The total construction activity also has an impact on staffing levels necessary to meet the demands of project reviews and inspections by various City departments. This metric is also directly related to building permit fees collected for permit services.

          How do we measure this metric?

          This measure tracks the total valuation of projects that are submitted for building permits, including materials and labor costs. Each building permit that is submitted identifies the valuation of the construction project, upon which the building permit fee is based (1% of total valuation).

          What progress are we making toward this metric?

          A specific goal for building activity is not set as part of this measure. Rather, this measure can be used as an indication of how the local economy is progressing and can be used as a leading indicator of potential future growth impacts. Actual construction activity is influenced largely by general economic conditions and cannot be significantly influenced by City activities. Historical building permit valuation is tracked for comparison.
